How do the Christians on here keep Sunday as a special day?

Do you not watch telly?  Do you have a lie-in?  Do you not go shopping?

One area I’ve noticed that seems contradictory in a lot of Christian’s lives is that they won’t go shopping on a Sunday but they are happy to go out for dinner - I’ve never received a satisfactory answer as to why that is.

By taking a break from using the internet by the looks grin

I think the only answer to your puzzle is that most Christians are very fuzzy in their thinking on the use of Sunday and inconsistent in their practice. I find it hard to see any argument that would not allow shopping, but would allow going out for dinner.

Stephen Clark wrote an article on this in Issue 22 (Spring 2008) of Table Talk. It is available to download or read here:

So it would seem!

I agree that most Christians are fuzzy in their thinking on this area, and also generally can’t back up their point of view.

I was personally brought up in a household with a fairly strict line on this, but it can also seem a bit arbitary.  We didn’t go shopping or out to dinner, or anything like that, but watching telly etc. was ok.  The argument with the former was that we didn’t feel we could require other people to work because Sunday was a day of rest (other than essential services), but then why should the people running TV stations not have a day off!

I don’t think any of us will ever have this completely sorted - it’s not a vastly important issue but I do think that it’s one which has slipped away and Sunday has almost become like any other day for most people.

I’ll take a look at the article when I have a chance.
