On the front page on the June 2008 Evangelicals Now there is article (which is not online yet) titled Boris asks for prayer on gun crime. The article talks about the Global Day of Prayer on 11th May:

...Boris Johnson, newly elected Mayor, asked to speak at the Millwall event to share his vision of how churches could work with him in stamping out gun and street crime and to ask for ongoing prayer support…

In addition to prayer, what positive steps can churches take on this?

I think that the Church being the centre of the community will definitely help to reduce crime.  I’m not particularly familiar with it, but I know that an organisation called Bar’N’Bus has recently been visiting our local area one evening a week, and it has given local youngsters a focus and something to do, rather than hang around and cause minor trouble.  The bus is staffed by volunteers from local Churches.
