The Role of Government in Legislating Morality

“For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. 4For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.”—Romans 13:3-4 (NIV)

“Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, 14or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.” —1 Peter 2:13-14

These passages talk about the role of government in legislating morality. The government is there to punish those who do wrong.

How broad should this apply? In the Old Testament, there were punishments for adultery, and blasphemy. If there was a massive revival in Britain, would it be a good idea to bring back criminal sanctions for these things?

I have no doubt that if these things were enforced then society would be a better place to live, but there would have to be a seriously massive revival before they would ever be implemented because in a ‘progressive’ society they would be viewed as backwards.

While the goverment legislates morality, it also seems to have recently been deliberately legislating immorality, effectively puninshing those who stand up for what is Biblically right.

The trouble is that the government have, over the years, brought in laws which are contrary
to the Laws of God which we have in the Bible.
We are now living in age where everyone does that which is right in their own eyes,
and literally many get away with murder.
Revival is talked about as the answer, but at present I hear very little about prayer,
calling upon God to turn the Nation back again to himself.
I don’t think many Christians really realize that this is the only answer many say
‘If Revival comes- it comes’ Only last week I heard a sermon by a very well known
Christian minister, he said that we shouldn’t be praying for Revival, rather we should
pray for the pastors of churches.
I am sure it is not a case of either-or, we can pray and work for many things,
but surely Revival is the greatest need of our day. May God give us prayer.
