As a member of the Gideons I visit Exeter Prison from time to time, joining in the service and supplying Bibles and New Testaments for the prisoners.
I was there this week, and the Chaplain showed me the new copy of the Qu’ran which has been shipped in bulk to the prison. At the front is a 20 page attack on Christianity, including the veracity of the Bible and the deity of Christ. Now I have no objection to the Qu’ran being made available in prisons, but can anyone imagine the furore there would be if the introduction to the Gideon Bible included an attack on the Qu’ran and the prson of Mohammed.
Prison chaplaincies are now supposed to be ‘multi-faith’ so Moslem ‘chaplains’ have access to Christian prisoners. Should they be allowed to use this book to undermine the faith of Christians in prison? Should Christians write a rebuttal and hand it out to Moslem prisoners?
I feel there should be some sort of protest made to the Government about this. Would Affinity take a view on it? It seems that these Qu’rans will also be offered to hotels.
Finally, an inscription on these books reveals that they have been financed by a Saudi Arabian prince. What chance of the Gideons send inga supply of Bibles to a Saudi jail?
