Introduction:
If we are in a period of significant cultural change, from modernism to postmodernism, how should the church respond to this new situation? Should there be a change of message as well as a change in methods as the church continues its mission in an emerging culture? D. A. Carson has written that “at the heart of the emerging reformation lies a perception of a major change in culture.” Furthermore, he asks the question that ought to be on our lips as we assess emerging church proposals: Is there at least some danger that what is being advocated is not so much a new kind of Christian in a new emerging church, but a church that is so submerging itself in the culture that it risks hopeless compromise?
