Thought for the Day – Thursday

Each morning this week, Graham Nicholls, our Director, is offering the Thought of the Day on Premier Christian Radio and Premier Praise. You can hear the Thought of the Day around 7.20am on Premier Christian Radio and 7.40am on Premier Praise.

Here is the text of what Graham shared this morning:

This morning we’re going to be looking at the wisdom in the book of Proverbs on the distressing topic of addiction.

Many people both then and now use drink and other substances to help forget the challenges real life brings. But the reality is that they cause untold damage as we lose control of our faculties and any sense of moral restraint.

Chapter 20 verse 1 says

“Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler;
    whoever is led astray by them is not wise.

We lose control, we lose our way, we get into fights.

And it’s addictive. In Chapter 23, the writer mocks the drunk who recognises the debilitating effects, but still want to find more supplies

Your eyes will see strange sights,
    and your mind will imagine confusing things.
You will be like one sleeping on the high seas,
    lying on top of the rigging.
‘They hit me,’ you will say, ‘but I’m not hurt!
    They beat me, but I don’t feel it!
When will I wake up
    so I can find another drink?’

Hear the warnings not to find our joy and identity in the bottom of a glass but in Christ who can truly make our hearts glad. Pray for those who have fallen into addiction that God may help them, perhaps even through your intervention.

My name is Graham Nicholls and I’m the Director of Affinity, a partnership of gospel churches. May God bless you, have a great day!
