The Bulletin (July 2007)

imageWelcome to the fifth issue of The Bulletin, published by Affinity’s Social Issues Team to keep evangelical churches and individual Christians up to date with the latest developments in the field of social issues and public policy, all viewed from a biblical perspective. The Bulletin not only reports the facts of recent events, published intentions or actual legislation, but considers the implications for Bible-believers. Readers are helped to understand issues and to know how to respond to them in a biblical way.

The substantial and rapid breakdown in the traditional family in contemporary society has had alarming consequences for Britain’s economy - it is said to be costing £240 billion per annum. It has also led to a critical housing shortage, and adversely affected the education, health, happiness and discipline of many children. In this edition of The Bulletin, John Tindall looks at the family from a biblical perspective, and examines some of the influences from which it continues to be under attack.

Also in the July issue, the long-awaited government report on the future of burial policy, published last month, is considered by Rod Badams.  Throughout man’s history, much has been learned about a society’s attitude to life from its attitude to death. Today’s society is no exception – the advance of assumptions and practice based on secular humanism is exemplified in this latest report.

Sheila Stephen outlines ways in which churches can be more closely involved with disabled people as public policy increasingly moves away from rigid care structures towards a more flexible approach based on individual needs and immediate priorities.

In addition to this, there is the usual news round-up, summarising and interpreting the latest information about a wide range of social issues.
