Welcome to this eleventh issue of The Bulletin, published by Affinity’s Social Issues Team to keep evangelical churches and individual Christians informed of the implications of legislation and public policy on social issues in the UK.
It is 60 years since the publication of Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell’s portrayal of the nightmare society which first introduced us to Big Brother and the Thought Police. In this July 2009 issue of The Bulletin, Rod Badams assesses some present trends which demonstrate the validity of Orwell’s warnings. In the wake of the “scandal” over MPs’ expenses, Rod also seeks to draw some lessons about the morality of Parliament.
In assessing the latest developments in reproductive technology, Dr John Ling introduces us to yet more new words from the ever-expanding genetic vocabulary. He also keeps us up to date with the facts and figures about abortion and teenage pregnancy in the UK.
Sheila Stephen has been monitoring recent changes in public social policy governing the way in which disabled people are financially supported. As well as explaining the implications of these changes, she has some suggestions for churches to consider.
In this issue you can also find out about new guidance for teachers on diversity, and reflect with sadness on a further decline in marriage.
You will already be reaching for your mouse ... but please tell everyone in your church about The Bulletin so that they can benefit as well. Please print off copies for those who do not have access to electronic media.
