Welcome to this eighth issue of The Bulletin, published by Affinity’s Social Issues Team to keep evangelical churches and individual Christians informed of the implications of legislation and public policy on social issues in the UK.
The debate in Parliament last month on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill showed exactly where the British nation stands with respect to the ethical-utilitarian divide. Every vote which would have protected more embryos, safeguarded more unborn children, or strengthened a child’s family environment, was lost. In this latest issue of The Bulletin, Dr John Ling examines the implications of this eclipse of morality and the lessons which evangelicals need to consider in the aftermath of this tragic landmark moment.
In what is frequently and mistakenly described as a “multi-faith society,” religions co-exist on the basis of a convention which is known as “pluralism.” Rod Badams comments on the inability of pluralism to satisfy the aspirations of biblical Christianity, and suggests a more triumphalist (in the best sense of the word) approach.
Will we in future be voting for our MPs on our way home from church? Do the children of independent evangelicals qualify for places in Church of England schools? How are we to view, and avoid, that deadly virus Affluenza. And why will there be no more weddings at Powderham Castle? These are all questions asked or answered throughout the 32 pages of news, comment and analysis.
There is indispensable material here for evangelical churches and all individual Christians. Please circulate it as widely as possible, electronically to Christian fellow-members, colleagues or friends, or by printing off hard copies for those who haven’t access to a PC.
