The Bulletin (November 2007)

imageWelcome to this sixth issue of The Bulletin, published by Affinity’s Social Issues Team to keep evangelical churches and individual Christians informed of the implications of legislation and public policy on social issues in the UK.

In most editions of The Bulletin the relevance for Christians and churches of proposals by government, votes in Parliament, and findings of courts, are considered in detail.  This issue of The Bulletin is no exception.

The November 2007 issue looks at the wider implications of the judicial review of the Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2006 by the High Court of Belfast.  It also studies the significance of the introduction in October 2007 of “living wills” and “lasting powers of attorney” under the provisions of the Mental Health Act 2005.  Dr John R Ling sets out a powerful indictment of the proposed Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, to be considered by Parliament over the next few months.

Peter Fearnley, with the help of a ‘viewing’ team, reviews the content of the Friends and Heroes television series for children, currently being shown on BBC2, and Sheila Stephen offers some helpful responses to the “model” culture, and the damaging influence it can have on teenage (and even younger) girls.

As ever, there is much more than we have specified above in the latest 32-page issue of The Bulletin, and we urge all churches to give a high priority to considering how to understand and to respond to the issues which dominate or characterise the society in which we live, and to which our witness is directed.
