The Summer 22 edition of the Social Issues Bulletin is published today

The Affinity Social Issues Team publish a Bulletin three times a year that aims to inform the church on matters of social, ethical and legal concern for Christians. Each issue is free to download either as individual articles or the complete issue.

This Summer edition of the Social Issues Bulletin opens with the first of two articles on retirement by Roger Hitchings. Roger starts by looking at what the Bible has to say about retirement. In his second piece later on in the issue, Roger delves into his 25+ years of experience working with older people. He offers very practical advice to pastors and Christians on how to retire well. Rev. Stephen Allison and Dr Carys Moseley articulate some things we can learn from Scotland’s state-influenced religion following the Church of Scotland endorsing same-sex marriage and ‘conversion therapy’ bans. We then hear from a new organisation standing up for freedom of speech in Scotland, in particular against ‘buffer zones’ around abortion centres. Dave Greatorex from Christian Institute then shares a very helpful look into the Online Safety Bill being proposed by the UK Government focusing on how it impacts free speech. Our feature piece is a write-up of a presentation by the late Melvin Tinker by his son, Phil Tinker. Here Melvin presents a deep dive into what it means to be a Christian living in a secular society. The Bulletin closes with a book review and Dr John Ling gives us another of his very informative summaries of all things life.
