Affinity Study Conference Explores the Wonder of God

Around eighty people gathered in Northampton at the beginning of March for the biennial Affinity Theological Study Conference. This year’s theme, Great God of Wonders, focused on the doctrine of God – sometimes called ‘Theology Proper’ – exploring the nature and attributes of the Lord we worship.
The speakers – Mostyn Roberts, Bob Letham, Tom Brand, Steve Duby, and Michael McClenahan – are all respected scholars and authors, and the high standard of their papers reflected their depth of expertise. A major focus of the conference was Classical Theism, which teaches that God is ‘simple’ (not made up of parts), immutable (unchanging), and impassible (not subject to suffering or emotional fluctuation). There was also significant discussion about the place of the Nicene Creed – 1,700 years old this year! – which has defined the Church’s understanding of the Trinity but has faced some challenges in recent years. The conference provided a valuable opportunity to reaffirm these historic, biblical truths, enlightening minds while warming hearts and at the same time testing our conclusions against scripture in the robust discussion groups.
As ever, a defining feature of the Affinity conference was the extended time for small group discussion. These sessions, at times lively and robust, also fostered deep fellowship and reflection on the weighty themes explored. It was encouraging to welcome many new attendees this year, and plans are already in place to continue the conference in 2027 and beyond.
The Study Conference Papers are still available to purchase at a discounted price should you wish to dig into these important topics.
